Saturday energy links: more natural gas is not the solution

June 1, 2019 / carbonchronicle / 0 Comments
  • More natural gas isn’t a “middle ground” — it’s a climate disaster. The piece argues that natural gas, even if it traps slightly less heat than CO2, will still break the carbon budget. Arguably, that’s reason enough to phase it out ASAP.
  • A recent poll in Germany has the Greens as the most popular party.
  • A provocative piece at the Guardian argues that meat rationing, rather than a tax, is the only way to curb climate hypocrisy (something I admittedly practice, though I don’t consume as much beef as I used to). Myinstinct is that 1.) lowering emissions through electrifying the meat supply chain, as well as 2.) if necessary, raising a tax in order to lower beef and lamb consumption would at the very least cause less of an uproar. Rationing goods too closely resembles a planned economy for my liking. I would rather people who really love beef be able to live according to their preferences if they are willing to pay the price, while the rest of us simply give it up.
  • Vattenfall and GE Renewable Energy are planning to deploy the gigantic new Haliade-X wind turbines in Europe (I first mentioned the turbines here). Each one has a capacity of 12 MW, about 1/50th of a typical coal plant.
  • A first-of-its-kind storage facility in Utah plans to offer 1GW of capacity. More of this, please.
